China Town

"China Town is actually a row of prewar old building at Jalan Kg Cina. These buildings are believed to be the residence for the Chinese from China mainland who arrived in Peninsular Malaysia in the 19th century. Most of the houses are 2 stories, with brick or concrete structure and wooden flooring in the second storey. Some still keep its wood carving on the windows and huge heavy wooden front door whereas some were turned into the renewed modern concrete building.

The colourful long roof has created a unique and beautiful photographing spot for photo taking especially in evening before the sun disappears from the sky.

These century old building are now sundry shops, local coffee shops, offices for several tour operators, batik and souvenir shops, restaurants etc. Recently there are people who buy over the house from the original owners and turn it a ‘swiftlet house’ for their bird nest business.

There is also a Chinese Temple painted in red colour standing at the corner. The local believe that ‘Goddess’ of the temple has given them very accurate guidance and ‘protection’ during the hard time, therefore there is always worshipers redeem their vow to the God."

Since I never been to Chinatown in Terengganu yet, I want to share a bit information about China Town in KL, or known as Petaling Street. Kuala Lumpur’s China Town is a vibrant marketplace for Chinese-centric goods such as medicines and herbs to more contemporary items like fashion accessories and electronic products. Affectionately called 'Chee Chong Kai', which means 'Starch Factory Street', Petaling Street was once a tapioca mill for Chinese laborers. Slowly, it became the large, noisy and popular market it is today as business associations, temples and societies rose up.

From early afternoon till late at night, the entire street is cluttered with stalls peddling all manner of goods from under the sun. From Holland grapes to Taiwanese batteries and cigarette lighters to souvenir shirts, Petaling Street is a hive of commercial activity. Perhaps most famous among its goods are pirated products, ranging from the latest movies on DVD to China-made 'Rolex' watches and 'Versace' jeans to imitation Ray-bans. Don't forget to haggle! No price is set in stone. The prices are raised extremely high but you can bargain them all the way down, sometimes to more than half the price.

Besides shopping, a number of Chinese al-fresco restaurants are situated at an intersection of Petaling Street. These are popular places for tourists to eat at night. You can also pick up a snack from the many stalls that sell traditional delicacies such as pastries, savory meats and cakes.

Hola pappy!
I've been to the China Town before. I like to see the old and unique buildings with the colorful roof. When I entered the China Town i felt like i was in China for a while. Hmm..one thing that is so special about chinese is that you can find their community mostly in everywhere. You name it, America,Europe,Asia, they are around the world. FYI,in UK, the Chinese community is the fastest growing non-European ethnic group. Isn't that interesting when you travel to oversea you know that you are not alone. You have your "big family" there who can understand your mother tounge, can cook your traditional food, and also still practice the traditional heritage and culture though they are thousand miles away from their hometown. I hope one day it will also happen to our Malay people 'cause we are still lacking in that part.
